Design Review Guidelines

Highland Park neighborhood, one of 99 neighborhoods within the City of Birmingham, is located just a few miles southeast from the city center. Its 6,000-plus residents live in single-family homes, apartments, and condominiums.

Highland Park is a thriving historic urban neighborhood dating from the turn of the century. Its central feature is the long, winding Highland Avenue, which stretches from Five Points South all the way to Highland Golf Course and Clairmont Avenue. Most of Birmingham’s prominent families lived here at one time. It has five national districts within its boundaries, which combine to form the Highland Park local historic district with design review guidelines.

Highland Park offers urban living at its best. With three parks, sidewalks throughout, a golf course to the east, five churches, a hospital and other health care facilities, a service station, bank, and a few stores, it offers something for everyone. It is only a few minutes by car from downtown and is within walking distance of the Five Points South and Lakeview entertainment districts featuring world-class restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and specialty stores.

All residents of Highland Park are members of the Highland Park Neighborhood Association which meets to conduct business and hear residents’ concerns on the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Highland Golf Course clubhouse.
